(NECN: Julie Loncich) - The polls have opened for the Massachusetts senate special primary. Two democrats and three republicans are fighting for the right to represent their party in the special election.
Our Julie Loncich joins us live from a polling place in north Quincy where turnout is expected to be low.
Turnout is expected to be low, even for a primary.
This doesn’t have the momentum of the 2009 election to fill the late senator Ted Kennedy’s seat.
Massachusetts secretary of state Bill Galvin says a good indication of how low voter turnout might be Tuesday is the number of absentee ballots cast. They received 20-percent fewer this year than in 2009, as of Monday.
They’re only predicting 500,000 democrats and 200,000 republicans will vote.
Secretary Galvin says this election simply does not have the same momentum; he points to a lack of interest, Boston Marathon bombings and the time of year.
