It May Not Be a “storm,” But Northern New England Mountains to See Nearly Half a Foot of Snow This Weekend

Energetic disturbances as part of a returning Eastern U.S. jet stream "trough" - or southward dip in the jet stream winds aloft - will bring rain showers to Southern New England and snow showers to some of Central and most of Northern New England this weekend.  While there may be no organized surface storm from all of these upper level disturbances, the frequency, recurrence and, at times, intense bursts of snow to be seen in New England's Northern Mountains WILL add up over the course of the weekend.  In fact, with most of the snow falling Saturday (perhaps starting as a brief period of Saturday morning freezing rain in southern and central NH before changing to rain...watch out for slick spots on Saturday morning drives), and a bit more Sunday, total weekend amounts should look something like this - a sign that winter is returning:
