(NECN: Jim Braude) – John Carroll keeps score of the latest media messages from the campaigns.

We watch the campaign ads so you don't have to, although you just may want to.

Carroll is a professor of mass communication at Boston University. You can follow him on his "campaign outsider" blog.

We begin with the question: is the State of the Union address as good as a campaign ad?

Comedy Central’s Jon Stewart weighed in.

What does Carroll think of it?

“I thought it was pretty much downhill from there. It was long. It was fairly boring. There were sections that could only be heard by cash registers,” said Carroll. “I think the timing of it just seemed a little bit off…As a speech, it didn’t really hang together that well.”

Who does this reflect worse on?

Congress? Obama? Or Obama’s speech writer?

Listen to hear more from Carroll.
