Former Employee's Message to Market Basket Board

Joe Garon was a 49-year employee of the regional supermarket chain before being fired last weekend for supporting its ousted CEO

The former CEO of the Market Basket, Arthur T. Demoulas, has been ousted, leading to employee protests, customer boycotts, and empty shelves. On Wednesday, Demoulas released a statement, confirming that he has offered to buy the company.

Joe Garon was a 49-year employee of Market Basket before being one of eight employees fired last weekend. He has been a leader of the employee rallies calling for Arthur T. Demoulas to be rehired.

In addition, both of Garon’s sons are Market Basket employees, one for 26 years and the other for 16 years.

"You want to be like Artie. I mean, he’s humble, he’s honest, and he’s the guy you want to work for. You would run through walls for Artie," Garon began when asked about employee support for Arthur T. to return to stores. "He takes the time with everyone he meets. It doesn’t matter if you’re a buyer, like myself, you’re a first day bagger, you’re a vendor who’s in the office, he stops and talks to you and makes you feel like you’re an important part of the family."

The next turning point in the future of the supermarket chain Market Basket chain will happen on Friday with a Board of Directors meeting. Simultaneously, employees and supporters will hold their largest and final rally.

"These board members have only been around three, four years. It’s not the same for them. People like myself who have been there their whole lives who depend on what we do, not only for ourselves and for our family but for our communities. There are a lot of organizations that depend on us. It goes so deep in so many ways that they can’t even imagine," Garon explained.

Garon said he is hopeful that Arthur T. that will be able to buy Market Basket.

Meanwhile, a fund has been set up to help the truck drivers and warehouse workers who have been out of a job while supporting Market Basket employees.
