John Kerry Mourns US Diplomat

(NECN) - Secretary of State John Kerry is on a 10-day overseas trip that will take him through Europe, the Middle East, and Asia.

On Sunday, Kerry was in Turkey, hoping to mend the country's ties with Israel. During his visit, he paused to remember a US diplomat who was killed in an attack in Afghanistan on Saturday.

25-year-old Anne Smedinghoff was one of five Americans killed in the attack.

"Anne was everything that is right about our foreign service," Kerry said. "She was smart and capable, committed to our country."

Smedinghoff was the first US diplomat to die on the job since last year's attack on the US Consulate in Libya.
