Conn. Hospital Sends CDC Samples to Test for Enterovirus

Danbury Hospital is the latest New England facility to submit specimens

Danbury Hospital is the latest Connecticut facility to send specimens to the Centers for Disease Control to be tested for enterovirus.

The submission comes days after state officials said Connecticut Children's Medical Center in Hartford was treating suspected cases of Enterovirus D68, the mysterious respiratory illness that has hospitalized children in a dozen states, according to a spokesperson for the hospital.

Health officials in Rhode Island also confirmed suspected cases in that state.

"Over this weekend we noticed an increase in respiratory infections in our local emergency rooms," said Dr. James McDonald of the Rhode Island Department of Public Health.

Dr. Greg Dworkin, chief of pediatric pulmonology at Danbury Hospital, said they sent specimens to be tested for Enterovirus 68.

"We are doing our due diligence. We are not overly alarmed. We just want to know what we have," he said.

Enterovirus 68 presents like a bad cold or flu, according to doctors.

Symptoms include high fever, runny nose, sneezing, coughing, wheezing and difficulty breathing, according to the CDC. No fatalities have been linked to Enterovirus 68.
