Another cool and damp day is on tap across New England today as an area of low pressure develops south of the region. Scattered showers linger into the afternoon and evening before the next round of rain moves in after sunset. Highs today will only reach into the upper 40s to low 50s.

Some locations may tie or break previously-set coolest high temperature records thanks to long fetch off of the Gulf of Maine.

Tonight, heavier rains continue through midnight before tapering off to showers as coastal system pulls away from the area. Lows won’t deviate much from today’s “high” temperatures.

A big turnaround is on the way for Wednesday as an upper level low that has been stalled over the region since the weekend finally moves away from the region. High pressure from the great lakes ushers in pleasant and more seasonal weather back to New England.

Highs rebound well into the upper 60s and low 70s. On Thursday, expecting mostly sunny skies before clouds increase towards the evening. Similar highs expected for Thursday in the upper 60s and 70s.

An area of low pressure over the Carolinas moves towards New England on Friday, bringing rain and showers to southeastern Massachusetts, Rhode Island and the cape and islands. Additional showers may develop across the interior locales of New England.

Highs on Friday right around the climatological norm for this time of year in the low 70s. Looking ahead to the weekend, Saturday is looking fantastic with highs in the mid 70s as a strengthening southwest flow ushers warm air into the region with high pressure located over the Carolinas. High pressure shifts offshore to our east by Sunday, resulting in continued warming temperatures.

By the start of next week, expecting well above-normal temperatures to develop on the heels of a summer-like stretch of weather. Stay tuned to NBC Boston and necn for the latest updates from your early warning weather team.
