3 Hurt in Electrical Fire Near Trinity College in Hartford

Three people were hurt Tuesday morning when overloaded electrical cords caught fire at an apartment building across from Trinity College in Hartford, according to the fire department.

Fire officials said two people suffered smoke inhalation and a third has a broken ankle. All three were taken to Hartford Hospital for treatment of non-life threatening injuries and have since been released.

Firefighters were called to the 36-unit apartment building at 7 Brownell Avenue around 6:25 a.m. Tuesday after flames broke out in a first-floor bedroom. It took crews about 15 minutes to put out the fire.

They arrived to find heavy smoke and fire. Most of the damage was contained to that first-floor unit, according to the fire department.

A family of three adults and one child has been displaced. The fire department's Special Services Unit and the American Red Cross worked to find them temporary housing. All other residents were able to return home.

The fire marshal's office has deemed the fire accidental and said it was sparked by an overloading of extension cords, according to the fire department.
