Heroin and fentanyl overdoses continue to grab headlines, but methamphetamine is still a problem for law enforcement in Maine.

The Maine Department of Public Safety on Tuesday advised caution against picking up bottles alongside roads and at outdoor sites after a record number of responses to methamphetamine manufacturing.

Public Safety Commissioner John Morris said the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency responded to 86 meth incidents during the first six months of 2016. That compares to 56 responses for all of last year.

Morris said 44 of the law enforcement responses dealt with dump sites, usually found along roads or at other outdoor locations. Morris said that soda bottles containing the residue of meth making remain dangerous to anyone handling them.
