High School Senior Killed in Crash

A Massachusetts high school senior died and two others were injured in a car crash early Sunday morning.

A performance of Grease was canceled Sunday at Middleborough High School as students arrived to meet with grief counselors after learning the shocking news that a fellow classmate was killed in an early morning crash.

"My dad walked into my room and told me that my best friend passed away and I really couldn't believe it. I was in shock," said Jamie Horseman.

Police say 18-year-old Nathan Childs was killed when the car he was driving struck a telephone pole around 1:30 a.m. Sunday morning on Wareham Street.

Childs, a high school senior, was pronounced dead at the scene. Two passengers in the car suffered non-life threatening injuries.

All three young men had shared the stage performing in the school's production of Grease just hours before the crash. Police believe they were on their way home from dinner following the show.

"This is the first show he had done and he was personable and excited and they sing this song and it keeps reverberating in my head "we'll always be together," said superintendent Roseli Weiss.

The school notified student's of the accident early Sunday morning.

Justin Washburn was in the audience of Saturday night's show and says he never thought it would be the last time he'd see his friend.

"He was a smart kid, very smart, very talented in art, very well spoke, very driven," Justin Washburn.

"He was doing really good, working hard, it's so unfortunate to go right now at the best time of his life," Horseman added.

"It's a horrible tragedy for our school today and for his family. It's an incredibly strong school, together, and I think we'll come together for each other," said principal Paul Branagan.

Police say the cause of the accident is under investigation, but they say at this time it does not appear that drugs or alcohol were factors.
