Hiker Separated by Severe Storm Found Safe

Searchers said 32-year-old Jason Semple of Flushing, Michigan, and four companions were caught in the storm at the summit near Randolph on Tuesday morning

Searchers have found a hiker who vanished following a severe storm on New Hampshire's Mt. Madison.

They said 32-year-old Jason Semple of Flushing, Michigan, and four companions were caught in the storm at the summit near Randolph on Tuesday morning. They were spread out along the Appalachian Trail; each retreated by taking different trails.

By mid-afternoon, four of the hikers had reached trailheads and made cellphone calls to reunite. By 5 p.m., when Semple was not heard from, they called for help.

Teams were formed to search miles of trails on and around Mt. Madison. After several hours, one found Semple at a tent site about two miles into the woods from Route 16. Semple was in good condition.

Semple had a cellphone, but was in an area with no cellphone coverage.
