New Hampshire's child protection division is proposing adding a second shift and a new on-call system as a first step toward being able to respond to allegations 24 hours a day and seven days a week.

The staffing proposal was included in a report that the director of the Division of Children, Youth and Families presented to the state's Commission on Child Abuse Fatalities on Monday. Lorraine Bartlett says achieving complete 24/7 coverage would take significant time and money, but in the meantime, the interim plan she's proposing would allow the division to respond during the most critical hours without spending additional funds.

The plan calls for adding 18 positions to cover a noon to 8 p.m. shift and to extend hours for the division's central intake office.
