Oldest Public High School Football Match-up Meets at Fenway Park

It's the first time in more than 80 years that high school football has been played at Fenway

The oldest public high school match-up in the country met at the oldest ballpark on Thanksgiving.

Fenway Park played host to Needham versus Wellesley, and hundreds came to watch.

It's the first time in more than 80 years that high school football has been played at Fenway. Players and parents know the opportunity is special.

"Oh my gosh, he was out of his mind excited," Wellesley High School football parent Tiffany Zides said. "This is like a dream come true."

Glen Votapka watched his son, a quarterback and wide receiver for Wellesley, run out onto this historic field.

The game is a Thanksgiving Day tradition between the two schools that dates back to 1882.

"The players of this team always look forward to this last game on Thanksgiving Day against this rival," Votapka said.

This two-day high school football event attracted big crowds and tight security.

A nearby shooting overnight closed off some entrances before kick off; however, police said the investigation would not impact the games.

For all of these families and parents, the focus was on the field.

"I think it's wonderful. I think it's great. We waited a long time to come here," Needham High School fan Laura Flueckiger said.
