Authorities are investigating a police-involved shooting Saturday in Cranston, Rhode Island, after a suspect attempted to avoid arrest for possession of narcotics.

According to Cranston Police, an officer was trying to stop a car after he noticed a narcotics transaction take place. The driver, police say, struck the officer with the vehicle. Police say the officer, fearing for his safety, fired shots at the car. The officer was treated for minor injuries at Rhode Island Hospital.

Ultimately, the suspect, later identified as 31-year-old Alicia Mattera of Central Falls, was arrested on Randall Street. She is charged with felony assault, possession of cocaine, resisting arrest, duty to stop in an accident resulting in damage to property, and driving after suspension of license.

Police say Mattera has a lengthy criminal history involving a 2013 conviction for possession of a controlled substance. She is held without bail pending her arraignment in Warwick on Jan. 5.
