A Maine House candidate has been arrested on an aggravated assault charge after an accusation of domestic violence.
Republican Mark Bedell was arrested Sunday by police in Saco, where he lives. He and another first-time candidate, Democrat Maggie O'Neil, are vying for a seat left vacant by Justin Chenette, who's running for Maine Senate.
Maine Republican Party Chairman Rick Bennett and House Republican leader Ken Fredette both called on Bedell to drop out of the race.
Police said a 42-year-old woman reported that she was assaulted at Bedell's house. The 50-year-old Bedell was being held in the York County Jail and was due to make his first court appearance Monday. It was unknown if he had a lawyer.
