Suspect Charged in Double Homicide

Dara Poum was charged with the early August murder of Keith and Joseph Callahan

Police in Lowell, Massachusetts, have made an arrest in connection to the fatal shooting death of two brothers.

Twenty-eight-year-old Dara Poum has been charged with two counts of murder after police say DNA taken from a cigarette butt led them to him. Authorities say Poum was also wanted for a 2013 assault and battery case.

Thirty-five-year-old Keith Callahan and his brother, 29-year-old Joseph Callahan, were shot just after 2:30 a.m. on Aug. 10. Keith Callahan died on the scene, while Joseph Callahan died a short time later at the hospital.

"I'm just glad this is hopefully the right person, and he'll be brought to justice," said David Carlos, who grew up in the same neighborhood as brothers Keith and Joseph Callahan.

However, many are wondering why Paum was on Andrews Street in Lowell, since he was arrested in Chelsea, his last known address.

"Shortly before 2 o'clock that morning, this defendant entered the brothers' apartment, confronted one of them, demanding to see a person who was not in the apartment," said Middlesex County District Attorney Marian Ryan.

Officials say it led to a fight and a gun turned on Keith and Joseph, the sons of retired Lowell Police Sgt. Richard Callahan.

"I've spoken to the Callahan family today. And in some measure, this provides some comfort for them to know that the person responsible for their sons deaths has been charged," said Lowell Police Supt. William Taylor.

"They never bothered anybody, they enjoyed themselves, they enjoyed life. It's a sad, sad thing to see anyone cut down at that point in their life. Being 35, 29 years old. It's horrible," Carlos said.

According to Carlos, Keith left behind three children, while Joseph had two children of his own.

Poum may be in court Thursday to face the murder charges.
