Vermont GOP Official Seeks Investigation of Bernie Sanders Endorsement

A top official in the Vermont Republican Party is asking the state attorney general's office to investigate whether Democratic U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders made an improper campaign donation by urging supporters to contribute to a state Senate candidate.

Brady Toensing contends that in a May 24 email Sanders, who at the time was seeking the Democratic presidential nomination, asked his supporters to donate to Rep. Christopher Pearson, a Democrat whose candidacy Sanders had endorsed. Last week Pearson won his primary race.

Over the years, Toensing has made legal complaints against other Democrats.

He contends Sanders' email was an in-kind campaign contribution to Pearson's campaign that exceeded legal limits.

Sanders spokesman Michael Briggs told the Burlington Free Press the senator was "well within his rights" to send the message.
