Woman Falls Into Trash Compactor While Trying to Retrieve Keys

The Salem, Massachusetts, woman was transported to the hospital with a severely injured leg

A Massachusetts woman is hospitalized with a severely deformed leg after she fell into a trash compactor Monday while trying to retrieve a set of keys, authorities said.

Emergency responders were called to Loring Towers in Salem after a 38-year-old woman plummeted three stories into the trash compactor and was crushed, according to Salem police Capt. Conrad Prosniewski.

Police said a 19-year-old resident had offered the woman $20 to help find his lost keys. He held the woman's feet and lowered her head-first into the chute.

When that didn't work, he retrieved a sheet and tied it to the woman, again lowering her into the chute. The sheet ripped and the woman fell, Prosniewski said.

The Salem woman was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital with a severe leg injury and is listed in fair condition.

No charges have been filed.
