Woman Killed in Single-Car Crash in RI

The crash was reported around 9:20 p.m. Sunday in the area of Lewiston Avenue

Police have identified the woman who died in a weekend car crash in Richmond, Rhode Island, as a town resident.

Chief Elwood Johnson Jr. says 26-year-old Delaney Sowle was trapped in her car when it struck a tree on Lewiston Avenue on Sunday night. She was unresponsive when she was extricated and was taken to South County Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

Police say speed may have been a factor. Johnson says there was no evidence at the scene that Sowle used her brakes.

A small fire that broke out in the car's engine compartment was doused by a neighbor with a fire extinguisher.

No other vehicles were involved.

The medical examiner's office will determine her exact cause of death.
