Police Identify Officers Involved in Fatal Shooting of Man in Pawtucket, RI

Police in Rhode Island have identified three officers involved in the shooting of a 28-year-old man.

Pawtucket Police said Monday that Officer Ana Vertentes tried to make contact with DeShawn Cole on Friday after police received a call about a man with a gun. Police say Cole, who was armed, then attacked Vertentes, a violent struggle ensued and the officer fired her gun.

Police say two other officers, William Briggs and Dianne Rittman-McLaughlin, arrived during the struggle. They say Cole then confronted the two officers and each of them discharged their firearms.

Cole was pronounced dead at the hospital. Police say their investigation remains ongoing.

Vertentes was hired in 2016 and the other two officers have been with the department since 2010.

The American Civil Liberties Union of Rhode Island called earlier Monday for the department to release more details about the shooting.
