Rhode Island Man Gets 10 Years for Crash that Killed Teen

A Rhode Island man authorities say was drunk when he crashed his car, killing his 17-year-old girlfriend, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison.

Scott Gavitt, of Exeter, was sentenced Monday after pleading no contest to several drunken driving charges in connection with the February 2016 crash that took the life of his front seat passenger and girlfriend, Heidi Malstrom, a senior at Chariho High School.

Gavitt, 21 now, was 18 at the time.

Gavitt and two people in the rear seat suffered serious injuries.

Malstrom's mother, in a victim impact statement, said she misses her daughter "every second of every day" and her life is now "empty."

Gavitt did not speak in court, but his lawyer said he is remorseful and realizes he made "a huge mistake."
