Teachers Union Sues School Dept. Over Good Friday

A Rhode Island teachers union is suing the School Department over accusations it is preventing members from observing Good Friday April 3

A Rhode Island teachers union is suing the School Department over accusations it is preventing members from observing Good Friday April 3.

The Cranston Teachers' Alliance says nearly 200 requests for days off on Good Friday are being denied.

Union President Lizbeth Larkin says the lawsuit was filed Monday in Superior Court in Providence.

The School Department declined to comment.

Larkin said the issue is partly related to scheduling problems related to snow days and over what she called a misguided effort a year ago to be equitable by eliminating school breaks for Jewish holidays and Good Friday.
