PINKHAM NOTCH, N.H (AP) - Authorities say at least three people have been injured in an 800-foot avalanche on New Hampshire's Mount Washington.
WMUR-TV reports (bit.ly/W3YkEp) that rescuers from the U.S. Forest Service have located three people who were hurt Thursday evening. They include 26-year-old retired Marine Sgt. Keith Zeier, who lost his leg and suffered a severe brain injury in Iraq in 2006. He was climbing Mount Washington to raise funds and awareness for families of Special Operations forces killed and wounded in action.
Two other hikers also were injured. The three have been taken to a local hospital for treatment. Zeier's family told WMUR his injuries were not life-threatening. The condition of the others wasn't immediately known.
Gorham EMS Director Chad Miller says the avalanche happened at about 5 p.m.
