Police are investigating a shooting that took place in downtown Lowell, Massachusetts, on Friday afternoon.
Lowell police said they received a call shortly after 12 p.m. reporting gunshots with a victim shot in the area of 200 Market St. Soon after arriving, officers broadcast a description of a possible suspect.
Almost immediately, police said a male matching the description was seen running away from the area. He was stopped and found to be in possession of a silver handgun. He was arrested for illegal possession of a firearm and several unrelated outstanding warrants. His name has not been released.
Police also found a male suffering from a gunshot wound to his back inside a nearby apartment. He was taken by medical helicopter to a Boston hospital for treatment of his injuries. His name was not released by police and his condition was not immediately known.

The investigation is active and ongoing, according to police. They said preliminary investigation suggests that the shooting was an isolated incident.
