The city of Boston has created an online registry to allow people to directly order their birth certificates.

Officials say the move will help residents comply with the REAL ID Act that takes effect in October. The Boston Globe reports the Department of Innovation and Technology launched the web application in response to the 30 percent increase in requests for Boston-based birth certificates in the past year.

The REAL ID Act will require people to possess enhanced drivers' licenses to travel and enter federal buildings. The city says residents will need their birth certificates to get the new license.

Democratic Mayor Marty Walsh says he's partnered with Democratic state Rep. Michael Moran to create a statewide version of the registry.
