Philip Chism Attorney Asks for Timeline in Colleen Ritzer's Death

Prosecutors allege that Chism, who was 14 years old at the time of the crime, followed Colleen Ritzer, 24, into a school bathroom and stabbed, strangled, and raped her.

Philip Chism's attorney was in Essex Superior Court on Thursday to clarify the timeline around the death of a Danvers, Massachusetts, high school teacher.

Prosecutors allege that Chism, who was 14 years old at the time of the crime, followed Colleen Ritzer, 24, into a school bathroom and stabbed, strangled, and raped her. They say he then placed her in a recycling bin and dumped her body behind the school. Chism was later found wandering along Route 1 in Topsfield, Massachusetts.

Defense Attorney Denise Regan said in court Thursday that she wants to know more about when the body was found and who was present.

Regan also wants the communication between law enforcement, including phone records and emails, to be to be released.

"I think its clear that the defense here is trying to establish that statements that were made from him were not made voluntarily, either because of his age or because issues regarding Miranda, or his invocation of his right to remain silent," Chapman said. "If the body was recovered as a result of statements that were obtained improperly, then it's possible that the body could be suppressed."

Chism is also facing charges in connection to the assault of a Department of Youth Services worker on June 2.

Chism was not present in the courtroom. No trial date has been set, but the next pre-trial hearing is set for Jan.
