The Rhode Island Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals is trying to track down the suspect they say is responsible for sexually assaulting a dog in Woonsocket.
Animal cruelty investigator Joe Warzycha said the RISPCA received a call from Ocean State Veterinary Specialists in East Greenwich on Feb. 16 when a Corgi-Labrador mix was brought to them with "pretty significant" injuries.
"(the) dog is still being treated and monitored at one of the local hospitals," said Warzycha.
He told WJAR-TV the person who brought in the 4-year-old female dog identified a potential suspect in a Woonsocket apartment.
The RISPCA was able to get a search warrant to enter the apartment and obtain DNA evidence of one suspect but according to WJAR-TV, that suspect told authorities his roommate was likely to blame for the assault.
Warzycha said the second suspect later left for New York and is now refusing to submit DNA.
The RISPCA is using forensic technology and working with Green County sheriff's department in New York as part of their investigation.
