Officials Defend Text Notifications, Focus on Finding Black Boxes

Airlines officials on Tuesday defended text message notifications sent to family members on the presumed fate of the Malaysia Airlines jet. CEO Ahmad Jauhari Yahya said the company's "sole motivation" was to make sure the victims' families "heard the news before the world did." Officials also said that preparations were being made to provide the families with more than the $5,000 they were already set to receive as compensation. Meanwhile, searchers are now focusing on recovering the aircraft's black boxes for possible explanations. But the clock is ticking: The battery life of the "pinger" in the devices that contain voice and data recorders may have as little as two weeks left before they go silent forever. Bad weather suspended efforts again in the search zone Tuesday for another 24 hours, making a combined total of 48 hours of no searching. Operations will resume on Wednesday.
