Seemingly Endless Sunshine to End With Upcoming Showers

Temps a Bit Cooler Ahead of Expected Fronts

Today (Monday): Cool with sun & clouds. Highs 60-65. Overnight Monday Night: Clouds arrive late. Lows in the 50s, 40s north. Tuesday: AM sprinkles, then mostly cloudy, breezy. Highs around 70. (Published Monday, Sept. 30, 2019)

After another stellar weekend, we’re waking up to more sunshine and dry air on this Monday morning.

Don't get too comfy with the idea of endless sun and mild temps, however. You know it has to end sometime and already we’re also following a significant twist in the pattern over the next five to seven days that will field better chances for rain and cooler-than-normal temperatures.

Wet weather would almost be a welcome sight after a fairly dry September that’s only seen a little over 2 inches of rain (over an inch below normal). We’re not in dire straits, but the short-term dryness has spiked in recent weeks.

Now, with the potential for a stalled front on Wednesday and Thursday, a general soaking rain may be in the cards.

Cool high pressure settles in for Monday. High clouds may spill overhead, but we’ll stay dry. Tuesday, the warm air tries to mount a comeback. Although 80s seem out of reach, we could easily leap back into the 70s with limited sun and a quick-moving shower.

That’s not the "twist" in the pattern that we’re seeing, however. With a front sliding in Wednesday, the region will be split between the cool air to the north and the mild air to the south. We should see the temps climb to the 70s before a sharp drop late day and into Wednesday night.

This is significant because it appears there is another front coming in late week that will reinforce the cold and potentially set us up for the first freeze of the season in Southern New England. For now, it appears that our first weekend in October may truly feel like autumn.
