Boston's Theater District is the hub of the city's performing arts scene, and a regional producing company is now getting its chance in the spotlight of Tremont Street.

Fiddlehead Theatre Company has been producing shows in the Boston area for 22 years. Their production of "Show Boat" is now on stage at the Shubert Theatre, a first for Fiddlehead.

"Everyone wants to be under the lights of Broadway. And this is Boston's Broadway," said Meg Fofonoff, Founding Producing Artistic Director of Fiddlehead.

Fiddlehead is partnering with Citi Performing Arts Center to bring two musical productions to the Shubert for the upcoming 2016-2017 season. Fofonoff says it's a dream come true.

"We finally found a theater ... that understands the kind of production values we have and allows us to do the work at the level that we want to do it," Fofonoff said.

For Associate Producing Artistic Director Stacey Stephens, the change of venue means higher audience expectations and bigger productions.

"With a cast this size, over 300 costumes and I think there are 57 wigs and a 27-piece orchestra, it's been a challenge but thrilling and exciting," said Stephens.

Fiddlehead's "Priscilla, Queen of the Desert" makes its Boston premiere in September, while the classic "Carnival" comes to the Shubert in May. For now, Fofonoff and Stephens are focused on continuing their high-quality work while making an impression on audiences.

"We really hope 'Show Boat' will both touch people, make them go out of here dancing and humming the tunes, but also make them think," said Fofonoff.

"Show Boat" is at the Shubert through Sunday, July 3. Tickets start at $53. For more, click here.
