One man died Saturday after a canoe overturned in Malletts Bay in Colchester, Vermont, according to a statement by the U.S. Coast Guard.

The canoe was carrying three men.

30-year-old Nicholas Milac from Charleston, South Carolina and 38-year-old Michael Heeney of Burlington, Vt. were reportedly able to swim to shore where they were helped after locals said they heard yelling from the water.

The 3rd man, 35-year-old Christopher Shane Brown - also of Charleston, S.C. - was reported missing around 9:20 a.m.

Along with the Coast Guard, the Colchester police and fire departments, Malletts Bay Fire Department, and Vermont State Police all aided in the search for Brown.

After over five hours of searching, state police divers recovered his body around 3:12 p.m. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

While Brown's cause of death is not yet known, the Coast Guard said the water was 46 degrees, with a survivability of about nine hours if the submerged person is wearing a life jacket.

None of the canoeists were wearing flotation devices when their boat capsized.
