32 Mass. Men Face Child Pornography Charges

(NECN: Ally Donnelly, Framingham, Mass.) - More than 30 people were arrested in Massachusetts on child pornography related charges as a result of a of police sweep that officials made public on Tuesday.

"We will never stop coming after you," warned Mass. State Police Colonel Marian McGovern.

The sweep was the largest one of child pornography suspects in state history.

"These people are your neighbors," said McGovern. "These people look just like everyone else, and they're doing these things under the cover of their own homes."

Operation Corral netted 32 men from all over the state, and suspects are accused of everything from assault and battery on a child to possession and dissemination of child of pornography.

The list includes men young and old, including 59-year-old Jose Salgado, a TSA screener at Logan airport; 62-year-old Peter Galvin of Scituate, Mass., a yacht salesman who gives sailing lessons through the town's rec center. The suspects are a college educator, a maintenance man, a shut-in and more.

By putting these images out there, what may happen is that somebody may say, 'Hey, that guy is a coach, that guy is my neighbor and the kids are always over there, and I always wondered, is it creepy?" said Boston Detective Daniel Fagan.

The sting was a multi-agency effort between, among others, Mass. State Police, the Secret Service, Boston Police and Homeland Security.

Suffolk County ADA Christina Miller says music sharing web sites have made it easy for child predators to easily and quickly trade large files of pornography. Investigators say in this sweep the found countless images of kids being abused, including thousands of toddlers.

"We cannot shred them, we cannot burn them," said Miller about the images on the Internet. "Once they are on the Internet, they are there forever, and they are irretrievable."

Investigators say they have a tremendously difficult job as predators get more tech savvy and devices, such as smart phones, become more accessible.
