A Massachusetts man wanted in connection to his elderly mother's murder last week has been arrested in North Carolina, according to the Middlesex County District Attorney's Office.
Forty-six-year-old Matthew McAveeney of Winchester was arrested by Belmont Police after being stopped in store parking lot around 3:45 p.m. Tuesday. He's expected to be brought in front of a judge in Gaston County District Court on Wednesday on a fugitive from justice charge.
McAveeney's 70-year-old mother, Barbara McAveeney, was found dead in her Winchester apartment on Swanton Street last Tuesday after police conducted a wellness check. The state medical examiner determined her cause of death to be blunt force trauma to the head.
In addition to an arrest warrant for murder, McAveeney also has warrants out for his arrest for multiple charges, including armed assault, assault and battery, and two counts of cruelty to animals.
