After a frosty start with some sunshine early this Sunday morning, clouds are racing back in with a rain and snow mix arriving south and west late in the day.
The system is fairly weak and has marginal cold air, but it looks like inland areas of central and southern New England may pick up a couple inches overnight into tomorrow first thing. Minor impacts are associated with this system.
With that said, we are under a Winter Weather Advisory until 7 a.m. Monday for most of Massachusetts, northern Connecticut and northern Rhode Island.
Plan on slippery road conditions and an impact on the morning’s commute. Snow accumulation is expected to average 2-3 inches northwest of Interstate 95 and come to an end early-mid morning Monday.
We’re expecting mainly a rain event southeast of I-95. At the same time, we cannot rule out a brief period of snow before ending this Monday morning.
Near the shore it’s likely to be a mixture of rain and snow with very little accumulation.
Monday will stay rather gray in southern and eastern New England with a light mix of rain or snow possible. The mountains will be mostly cloudy with some flurries.

Monday will see temperatures mostly in the 30s to low 40s. It’s a somewhat challenging forecast for the middle of the week with low pressure stalling in the gulf of Maine, and some upper level instability, so that means many clouds and a chance of some light rain or snow, especially near the shore.
We may have some icy roads at night if it’s damp enough.
In downtown Worcester, a mixture of snow and sleet fell Sunday, but it didn't amount to much. Wet roads kept it from accumulating, but sidewalks did get a light coating.
It's the second snowfall in Worcester within the past few weeks, after a storm the week before Christmas dropped about a foot of snow in parts of town.
At Rocky's Ace Hardware, they have all kinds of supplies for sale because it doesn't take a major storm for people to race out and grab last-minute items.
“They’re stocking up on a lot of ice melt, shovels, all the ice scrapers for their cars. Even the spray stuff so it doesn’t stick to their car windows,” Tyler Clockedile said.
Rock salt is the store's biggest seller.
“Usually, there’s a fine line between people who are ready and then people who think it won’t be really much and then they’re rushing in to get it,” Clockedile said.
In anticipation of the weather, the city's parking ban took effect Sunday night, as well, meaning no parking on either side of main arteries, bus routes and streets in the downtown area. On all other streets, parking is permitted only on the odd-numbered side of the street, unless otherwise posted.
